Crossrail is the new high frequency, high capacity 118km railway for London and the South East. The Crossrail route will run from Reading and Heathrow in the west, through 42km of tunnels under central London, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd, which is managing a £50m upgrade of the Ilford Yard train depot, appointed Aggreko to provide temporary power for testing and commissioning new sidings and buildings.
Uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) were needed to prevent drops in voltage occurring during the testing period - so the site had a resilient flow of power at all times.
It was also critical to avoid any power interruptions on site, including during maintenance and servicing of generators.
To avoid disruption all equipment was delivered and installed between midnight and 5am and monitored and tested 24/7 remotely via Aggreko Remote Monitoring.
Aggreko's scalable load-on-demand configuration used three smaller 500 kVA generators to power the same 1500 kVA peak output as one larger unit.
These were linked to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) of two 500 kVA units. Because the generators switched on and off automatically to align with site power demand, this was very fuel efficient - reducing both operational costs and emissions performance. The use of smaller generators also reduced noise.
Why was Aggreko chosen?
Aggreko's specialist construction division is experienced in meeting the requirements of complex projects, where timescales are very tight and power resilience is critical.
VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd was assured that all the equipment had been fully serviced and loadbank tested prior to delivery to ensure reliable, optimised performance.
The company also had confidence that Aggreko's engineers are fully trained and approved to work in the rail and construction industries and meet the stringent quality, safety and environmental standards.
Aggreko was appointed to deliver the design and installation of 1 MVA generator sets at Ilford Depot. All elements of the work were critical to the programme and were required under extremely testing timescales. The installation, testing and commissioning were completed as per the programme commitment, to an excellent quality and with minimal duration, whilst adhering to all self-imposed Health & Safety requirements.Nick Langdon, Building Services Manager, VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd
