Western Power Distribution (WPD) is the electricity distribution network operator for the Midlands, South West and Wales.
When one of WPD's 132 KV – 11 KV transformers caught fire in the compound, the debris and heat damaged the neighbouring secondary transformer that was undergoing maintenance. This resulted in the loss of power to 13,000 domestic and industrial consumers in the Grantham area.
The customer needed high voltage (HV) power to quickly restore power to its customers and then support while the transformers were repaired and bought back onto the grid.
Aggreko provided a two-wave solution to resolve the problem. Firstly, to quickly restore power to consumers, 10 MVA of varying sized generators were dispatched immediately to strategic locations across the greater Grantham region.
Once consumer supply was restored, a second HV power package was designed and engineered to support WPD while they brought the second transformer back onto the grid.
Aggreko’s plan provided a 10 MVA 11 KV high voltage power package running in-sync to support the transformers' reinstatement.
As the load increased on the second transformer, the low voltage in-field generation was gradually switched off. Aggreko’s HV power package then began to synchronise onto the network and baseload to offer support for any voltage fluctuations seen while the load changed.
As the project developed and a replacement transformer was installed, Aggreko’s HV installation was scaled up and down in-sync with the network, providing a dynamically adjusted baseload grid support solution.
Why was Aggreko chosen?
Aggreko has a framework agreement in place to support WPD for high voltage and low voltage solutions across the East Midlands area.
The Aggreko team was the first point of contact when WPD faced an emergency situation.
This was a very challenging project with quickly developing scenarios that required instant attention to detail and dynamic design. Aggreko delivered the solution professionally and in addition answered all the support parameters required by WPD for HV grid support.Ian Brookes, Area Manager, Western Power Distribution
