Aggreko, the global leader in temporary power and temperature control solutions, is helping Ireland capture the festive spirit with the provision of temporary chillers and generators for two ice rinks in Dublin, as part of a three-year contract for the 7Up Christmas on Ice festival.
The extravaganza offers fun and entertainment for all ages throughout November, December and January and includes Ireland’s largest covered ice rink in the RDS, Dublin with a second rink in Liffey Valley Shopping Centre.
Synergy Project Management, the company responsible for operating the festival, called on Aggreko’s expertise to chill the ice rinks. Aggreko provided two 300 kW chillers powered by a 400 kVA generator for the 1,080 square metres of ice that created the rink in RDS. For the 720 square metre rink at Liffey Valley, the company supplied two 200 kW chillers with a 320 kVA generator.
Paul Daly, sales engineer from Aggreko, explains the process: “The ice rinks are built using a system similar to underfloor heating. A series of pipes are laid out on a mat and filled with our glycol and water mixture, which is cooled and pumped around the pipework by our chillers. It takes around three days to create the ice rink, by pouring water onto the mat, which then freezes. This process is repeated several times to create a substantial layer of ice.”
To preserve the ice, the chillers need to operate at -12C for 24 hours a day. Aggreko’s service engineers in Ireland are on hand to maintain the ice rinks throughout the rental period, ensuring that the equipment operates effectively.
Jo Mathews from Synergy Project Management adds: “We called on Aggreko to supply the temporary power and chillers for the ice rink because of their experience in providing equipment to similar events. As the organisers responsible for such a prestigious event in Dublin’s calendar, we needed to ensure that the suppliers were reliable. It’s great to know that if anything goes wrong, we can call on Aggreko 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
Aggreko serves many customers throughout Ireland, from utility providers to venues for major sporting and entertainment events and is supported by a dedicated team of sales and service engineers who provide technical expertise and solutions.
