Aggreko provides the cure at John Radcliffe Hospital
Aggreko, the global leader in temporary power and temperature
control solutions, has provided power generation equipment to one
of the UK’s leading hospitals while upgrade work on the permanent
power supply was carried out.
Three 1,850 kVA generators were used at the John Radcliffe
Hospital in Headington, Oxford, which is part of the Oxford
Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, while a new substation and permanent
generator were installed to replace the old, existing arrangement.
The previous system could not provide enough capacity for newly
extended facilities. With the critical nature of the work carried
out at the hospital, using sophisticated and sensitive medical
equipment, it was important that there were no problems or
interruptions to the power supply while the work was completed.
The Hospital Trust has a strict policy on generator use, so
prior to the equipment being delivered, reliability trials had to
be undertaken at Aggreko’s Sutton service centre, followed by
post-delivery checks once the generators arrived on site. Each
generator was tested to 110 per cent capacity for one hour and the
whole procedure had to be witnessed and verified by the team from
the NHS Trust estates department and BAM Construct UK, which was
the building contractor for the project.
Ben Johnson, field service team leader for Aggreko, said: “We
were brought in to supply the generators for this project after the
failure of two previous attempts by another temporary power
provider.
“Our Sutton service centre team worked very closely with the NHS
Trust and BAM to ensure the correct generators were specified and
used for this project, as it was critical the supply was maintained
and constant.
“The generators were in place for a total of four days and were
running for eight hours each day with full fuel management support
from Aggreko if required. The whole job ran very smoothly with
everything going according to plan and the John Radcliffe estates
team were very pleased with the Aggreko generators and our service.
This really demonstrates the value of involving the power
specialists at the outset to ensure a reliable and worry-free
project.”
