Aggreko Powers Bluebird Electric
Speed Trials
Aggreko, the global leader in temporary power and temperature
control systems, has provided vital power to support the Bluebird
Electric team as they attempted to set a new land speed record at
the famous Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire.
During the weekend of the 13th and 14th August 2011, Don Wales –
grandson of legendary racing driver Sir Malcolm Campbell and nephew
of Donald Campbell – conducted speed trials in the 2011 Bluebird
Electric car with his son, Joseph. The pair attempted to beat the
previous UK electric vehicle land speed record of 137 mph set by
Don in 2000.
Aggreko provided one 60 kVA and two 30 kVA generators to charge
the Bluebird Electric car for the record attempts and provide
temporary power for the support team.
Although the record attempt was unsuccessful, the speed trials
formed an important part of the preparations by the Bluebird
Electric team to set the world electric vehicle speed record at
more than 500mph in 2013. Tests using differing battery
technologies and drive units are being evaluated by the team
following extensive re-engineering work on the chassis and
aerodynamic improvements to the body.
Aggreko also supplied a generator for essential vehicle testing
at Haverford West in June 2011.
